Description
In a nutshell:
A ripe, vibrant Kiwi take on Riesling thats more expressive than you might think.
The lowdown:
At a modest 9.5% ABV, this light-bodied Kiwi Riesling takes a cue from its German heritage, and though it sits in the off-dry category its crisp acidity makes is very well balanced and refreshing in nature. Fresh aromas of mandarin, zingy lime, and green apple are lifted by a hint of jasmine, making it as fragrant as it is zesty. The Blind River sub-region's character shines through in a distinct mineral finish, adding a touch of complexity and edge to the mellow fruits making it a lively and worthwhile wine.
The Producer:
Established in 2005 by Fiona Turner and her husband Hamish, Tinpot Hut is named after an old mustering hut, a nod to the area's sheep farming past. Nestled in the Blind River sub-region of Marlborough's Awatere Valley, their 20-hectare vineyard produces a range of expressive wines. While their Sauvignon Blanc takes centre stage - as you might expect from these parts - Fiona, with the expertise of her winemaking friend Matt Thompson, has also shown that varieties like Pinot Gris, Grüner Veltliner, and Riesling can thrive here too. It's all about quality, with just a hint of a pioneering streak.
When to drink:
Its gentle sweetness and lively acidity make it an appealing match for seafood, Asian dishes, light salads, or creamy soft cheeses.
