Description
In a nutshell:
A beautifully crisp, citrus and floral white from North Macedonia.
The lowdown:
North Macedonia, once a part of former Yugoslavia, has always grown quite a lot of grapes which generally made cheap, blended wines or went for distillation. But as in many such places some quality producers are starting to emerge meaning that if you look there are some good wines to be had at relatively modest prices. The Tikves winery is one such who are using state of the art equipment and methods to produce some excellent wines. This lovely little white I made from the local Smederevka grape together with about 15% Riesling, each variety being vinified separately in Stainless steel before blending and bottling. It has a delicately scented nose of white flowers and a hint of jasmine, that gives way to a crisp and intense palate with a vibrant finish and a nicely balanced acidity.
The Producer:
Tikves is based in the town of Kavadartsi in Northern Macedonia. First established back in 1885 they've managed to produce continually despite being in a part of the world that has seen many political upheavals over the years. After 1945, in Tito's Yugoslavia they were nationalised and quantity rather quality was the objective. However, since the 1990s things have changed somewhat. While it remains one of the largest wineries in the Balkans the current owners have changed things around completely. In 2010 a French wine consultant, Philippe Cambie, from the Rhône Valley, was brought in and alongside Marko Stojakovic, head winemaker, who grew up and studied in France before returning to the Balkans they head up the team who craft their range of quite impressive wines. Their focus is very much on indigenous varieties which, while often being tough for western European tongues to pronounce, are easy on the tongue when it comes to drinking them. Northern Macedonia might be off the beaten track, but at Tikve the wines being made easily stand comparison with many better-known names.
When to drink:
The lightness of touch make it a lovely aperitif and it will also accompany light seafood dishes very well also.
