Description
In a nutshell:
The well loved, sweet and aromatic coffee liqueur that originated in Jamaica.
The lowdown:
Tia Maria is one of the classic coffee liqueurs and has been a firm favourite ever since it first appeared back in the 1940s. It's made with cane spirit, coffee, vanilla and sugar which gives it a strong coffee character and complex aromatics. It has a full-bodied, rich, roasted coffee flavour while the vanilla adds a delicate fragrance and the cane spirit that vital bit of oomph. Simply poured over ice it's perfect, and it's an integral part of an Espresso Martini.
The Brand:
One story behind Tia Maria starts in the mid-17th century, when a beautiful young Spanish aristocrat fled the turmoil colonial war brought to the island of Jamaica. Her maid saved one family treasure, a small jewellery box with black pearl earrings and an ancient manuscript with the recipe for a mysterious liqueur. The recipe was named after the courageous woman and thus Tia Maria was born. Apparently, the recipe lay dormant for many years before being rediscovered in the 1940s by Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans, who began to produce and market it. An alternative version has it being created in Jamaica in the 1930s by the team behind Appleton's rum. Either way Tia Maria has been a favourite for coffee liqueurs lovers the world over and was used in the very first Espresso Martini recipe over forty years ago.
