Description
In a nutshell:
A Syrah-led Cape red with black pepper, cranberry, and subtle notes of garrigue and rose.
The lowdown:
This Syrah-led GSM blend draws on grapes from across the Western Cape, with Syrah from shale soils in the cooler Overberg and Breedekloof regions, while Grenache and Carignan are sourced from shale and schist vineyards in Breedekloof. Aged for nine months in old oak, it has a nose of liquorice and cherry jam, with a savoury palate layered in herbs, spices, plum, and berry notes. The bright acidity keeps it lively, and firm tannins lend a sturdy frame, making it a well-balanced and textured red. A wine with depth and a bit of edge.
The Producer:
Thorne & Daughters are at the forefront of South Africa's 'New Wave' wine movement, producing distinctive wines since 2013. Founders John and Tasha Thorne-Seccombe started their journey with support from fellow innovators Chris Alheit and Peter-Allan Finlayson, first sharing a cellar before settling at Gabriëlskloof, where their wines are crafted today. They focus on Cape white blends, drawing grapes from diverse growers across the Western Cape, including Stellenbosch and Swartland. John and Tasha work closely with growers, often using a 'lutte raisonnée' approach to minimise chemicals and enhance soil health, ensuring each wine truly reflects its origins.
When to drink:
Pair this with a beef stew and root veg or a rich shepherd's pie, where its warmth and depth match those hearty, savoury flavours a treat.
Suitable for Vegans
