Tiny-production Grenache from McLaren Vale's Clarendon area, fragrant and structured with red fruit, spice and a long, elegant finish.
The Lowdown:
Grenache is very much Thistledown's calling card, and this is one of their finest expressions. Made from a single, low-yielding site in Clarendon, McLaren Vale, it amounted to barely 1,500 bottles in 2023 - small batch in the literal sense. Fermentation is gentle, with whole bunches used for aromatic lift and extra structure, followed by ageing in large-format French oak. The result is fragrant and detailed: red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, layered with spice, earth and fine tannins. It has both brightness and depth, carrying its concentration with poise rather than weight.
The Producer:
Masters of Wine, Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan founded The Thistledown Wine Company in the idyllic Adelaide Hills in 2010. At their small winery they aim for lithe, energetic wines that illustrate the benefits of great sites and intelligent, low-intervention winemaking. They share a particular passion for Grenache and they source fruit from the best of the rich patchwork of South Australian vineyards and work in their own inimitable style make wines of exquisite subtlety, texture and detail designed to complement rather than overwhelm food. Their small batch, hand-made wines certainly have something a little bit special.
When to Drink:
Excellent with game birds, slow-roast lamb or charred vegetables, where its elegance and savoury edge work in tandem.
