Description
In a nutshell:
From Portugal's Alto Alentejo, this deep, lusciously fruity Alicante Bouschet is packed with dark berries, a touch of spice, and velvety tannins that make it bold and inviting.
The lowdown:
Alicante Bouschet is a grape that's found its true home in the Alentejo, where the hot, dry climate helps it thrive. It's a variety that doesnt do things by halves - deep in colour, intense in flavour, and full of personality. If you love bold, flavour-packed reds like Californian Zinfandel or a gutsy Aussie Shiraz, this will be right up your street. Juicy dark plums and soft spices glide across the palate, leading into rich chocolate and a touch of vanilla on the long, smooth finish. Big, bold, and seriously moreish, this knows exactly how to make an impression.
The Producer:
Founded in 2004, Terra dAlter owes much of its identity to Peter Bright - an Australian and one of the original 'Flying Winemakers' - who made Portugal home in the 1980s. With his vision, the winery grew into the respected name it is today. Their vineyards sit high in the Alto Alentejo, where the Serra de São Mamede mountains help to cool the otherwise harsh climate. That contrast is key, allowing them to produce wines with freshness, balance, and real character. Since 2023, the renowned Susana Esteban has taken on the role of consultant winemaker, adding her expertise to this well-regarded producer.
When to drink:
Substantial dishes are the way to go - think slow-cooked beef stews or rich Indian curries. The deep fruit, spice, and smooth tannins stand up beautifully to bold flavours and hearty textures.
Suitable for Vegans
