Description
In a nutshell:
From Portugal's Alto Alentejo, this refined Alfrocheiro is all about ripe cherries, a touch of piquant spice, and a smooth, elegant finish.
The lowdown:
Alfrocheiro might be a uniquely Portuguese grape, but there's something about it that feels a bit familiar. Grown in the hot, dry Alentejo, it still manages to keep its elegance and silky-smooth texture. Dark cherries lead the way, followed by bright stone fruits, sleek tannins, and a fresh, lively acidity that keeps everything nicely balanced. Juicy, vibrant, and easy to enjoy, it's been called Portugal's answer to Pinot Noir, and we can see why - there's a similar mix of bright fruit, finesse, effortless charm and character.
The Producer:
Founded in 2004, Terra dAlter owes much of its identity to Peter Bright - an Australian and one of the original 'Flying Winemakers' - who made Portugal home in the 1980s. With his vision, the winery grew into the respected name it is today. Their vineyards sit high in the Alto Alentejo, where the Serra de São Mamede mountains help to cool the otherwise harsh climate. That contrast is key, allowing them to produce wines with freshness, balance, and real character. Since 2023, the renowned Susana Esteban has taken on the role of consultant winemaker, adding her expertise to this well-regarded producer.
When to drink:
Slightly chilled in summer, it's spot on with grilled quail, or herby roast chicken. The bright fruit and fresh acidity cut through richness, keeping everything balanced and delicious.
Suitable for Vegans
