Tenute Sella 'Majoli' Rosato 2024
Pale, subtly floral and rather pretty, this is an elegant Alto Piemonte rosé with a nicely restrained character.
The Lowdown
Rosé from Piedmont isn't exactly ten a penny, but when it turns up looking this good, it's hard to ignore. Made from Nebbiolo - naturally - it's pale and delicate, but there's no mistaking the grape, with a gentle whiff of rose petals that gives the game away. Three months on the lees adds a bit of texture and interest, giving it enough personality to stand up for itself without losing its light touch. Nebbiolo's usually all brooding reds and serious ageing potential, but this shows it can do fresh and graceful too - and it carries it off in style.
The Occasion
Try it with fennel and orange salad, pea and mint crostini or smoked trout pâté - though frankly, it doesn’t need food. It's perfectly capable of holding court on its own.
The Producer
Founded in 1671, Tenute Sella is one of the oldest continuously operating wineries in Italy, based in Alto Piemonte at the foot of the Alps. This cooler northern corner of Piedmont turns out a fresher, more finely drawn style of Nebbiolo - lighter than the Langhe, with plenty of mineral bite. Sella has long focused on this more elegant expression, and under the direction of winemaker Riccardo Giovannini, the estate has seen a something of a resurgence - still very much true to its history, but with a renewed sense of purpose.
