Description
In a nutshell:
A very popular, intense, sea-salty, spicy and peaty Island Single Malt aged in American oak casks.
The lowdown:
The powerful Talisker 10 Year Old is the expression at the core of the distillery's range and is emblematic of their style. It's double distilled using malted barley that's been dried with peat smoke and aged for 10 years in American oak casks. There's a hint of brine on the nose along with powerful peat smoke aromas and a little citrus sweetness. On the palate a more dried fruit sweetness and barley malt favours come through the clouds of smoke making it really warming and intense. The finish is huge and lengthy with a touch of sweetness and an appetizing sweetness.
The Distillery:
Talisker is the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye and, on the banks of Loch Harport remains one of the most remote. Established in the 1830s it's one of the 'Clearance Distilleries' that are found across the Highlands. The distillery struggled through the 19th century and is wasn't until 1916 when it was acquired by a consortium led by the Distillers Company (who have since become Diageo, the current owners) that their fortunes began to improve. On the whole their whiskies are quite full-bodied and rich and are certainly quite approachable and easy to enjoy.
