Tabali 'Pedregoso' Gran Reserva Viognier 2023
Bright, floral and aromatic Viognier, mixing citrus zest and orange peel with white peach, pear and dried apricot, touches of candied fruit and a chalky minerality.
The Lowdown
Successfully sitting in the sweet spot between cool-climate freshness and Viognier’s naturally rounded feel, this is a wine that’s bright and generous. On the palate citrus and orange zest merge with stone-fruit and gently honeyed, floral notes while a neat chalky, mineral edge keeps the finish clean. The vineyards this comes from are just 24km from the Pacific, where the cold Humboldt Current and afternoon winds cool the stony, limestone-laced soils, giving a style that’s fresher than you might expect from a region so close to the Atacama Desert.
The Occasion
Ideal with simply cooked seafood and gently spiced Thai or Vietnamese plates, the citrus, stone-fruit and mineral streak standing up to richness and aromatics.
The Producer
Established in 2002 Viña Tabali is a pioneering winery in the Limarí Valley, on the edge of the Atacama Desert in one of Chile’s northernmost vineyard regions. They were among the first modern producers to settle in Limarí, a dry area with very low rainfall and a striking range of sites, from fog- and cold-current-cooled coastal vineyards to high-altitude slopes in the Andes. As a result the range is distinctive, with cool, mineral, finely shaped wines at one end and some firm, full-bodied reds at the other. Over the past two decades, chief winemaker Felipe Müller and viticulturist Héctor Rojas have collected a steady run of top awards for wines that showcase these sites
