Description
In a nutshell:
A ripe, bright and juicy Italian red from the southern end of Tuscany.
The lowdown:
This pretty impressive blend of 50% Sangiovese, and 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is a top quality Tuscan red that won't burn a hole in your pocket. Half the wine is aged in oak barriques for 12 months with the remainder maturing in stainless steel and the result is a very approachable wine with generous dark fruit flavours complemented by a gently warm spiciness. The texture is soft and velvety and the firm tannins are very well integrated.
The Producer:
Rocca di Frassinello, founded in 2002, is a joint venture between Paolo Panerai of Castellare di Castellina and Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite. The aim was to blend Tuscan and Bordeaux winemaking expertise and capitalise on the "Super Tuscan" phenomenon. Located in the Maremma area, the purpose-built winery is seriously impressive, featuring state-of-the-art gravity-fed systems and superb visitor facilities. Little expense has been spared to create something special, and the quality of the wines speaks for itself showing what happens when Italian tradition meets French innovation in a stunning Tuscan setting.
When to drink:
It's drinking at its peak now and for the next three or fours years and makes a good partner to roasted and grilled meats.
