Strange Bru Fernão Pires 2024
South Africa's zesty twist on a Portuguese classic - a vibrant, easy-drinking white that shimmers with freshness.
Dry, Light-Medium Body, Unoaked
Vegan
The Lowdown
Think peaches and citrus with a hint of something flinty. This South African white's got a bit of a backstory. It's made from a Portuguese grape, Fernão Pires, once used mostly for brandy. Now, thanks to some old vines way out in Worcester northeast of Cape Town, it makes a surprisingly fresh wine. Expect a burst of ripe peachiness and a crisp, dry finish. A fun discovery that's well worth a try.
The Occasion
This easy-drinking wine is a lovely match for fish cooked simply, a takeaway curry with a coconut kick, or a roast chicken dinner.
The Producer
Wildeberg Wines, nestled in South Africa's Franschhoek valley, thrive under the watchful eye of winemaker JD Rossouw. Here they craft their wines from both local vineyards and those further afield. As part of South Africa’s Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) system, their practices are environmentally friendly, and their participation in the Cape's Old Vine Project highlights their commitment to preserving vines over 35 years old. JD also experiments with lesser-known varieties and cutting-edge techniques, showcased under their SKU (Strange Companjie Unlimited) label. They're good for a fresh and innovative take on things.
