Description
In a nutshell:
A lavishly rich and creamy old vine Chenin Blanc from the Stellenbosch region of South Africa.
The lowdown:
Chenin Blanc is South Africa's most popular white grape, but few take quite as much trouble in making a superior version than Stellenrust. Hand harvested fruit from 55 year old vineyards is wild fermented and aged on its lees in French oak for nine months - not dissimilar to good white Burgundy. It has ripe and tropical honeyed fruit flavours and a smooth creaminess coming from the oak. To round off the lingering finish remains bright and crisp throughout.
The Producer:
From bottling their first wines back in 1928 Stellenrust is now one of South Africa's largest family-owned wine estates. They have nearly 400ha of vines surrounding the beautiful town of Stellenbosch where the varying terroir, ranging from the decomposed granite of Helderberg's Golden Triangle to the sandy clay soils high up in the Bottelary hills, are well suited to the different varietals and wines they produce. Stellenrust is also committed to ethical practices. They are a Fairtrade producer and run a successful Black Economic Empowerment project, allowing farm workers to own a share of the land they cultivate.
When to drink:
A wine that's won many awards and is very well worth the pretty modest price tag.
