Description
In a nutshell:
A complex, textured and fresh Romanian white.
The lowdown:
This style is nowadays referred to as an 'orange' wine and is made by allowing the grapes to macerate on their skins as in red wine making. The result is a wine full of extra layers and complexity. This delightful Romanian example is made primarily from the indigenous grape Feteasca Alba with additional Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. With a deep colour it has rich quince aromas whch lead to a structured and quite tannic with subtle stone fruit flavours.
The Producer:
Cramele Recas, located just outside Timisoara in western Romania, has undergone a remarkable transformation since the early 2000s under the leadership of Bristolian Philip Cox and his Romanian wife, Elvira. Their 700-hectare estate has become one of the largest wine producers in the country, crafting a vast array of wines. Combining ancient terroir with modern, quality-focused production methods, Cramele Recas delivers excellent, affordable wines that are gaining international recognition. They successfully cultivate both indigenous and international grape varieties, offering everything from approachable entry-level wines to premium cuvées that rival top-tier wines from regions around the globe.
When to drink:
For food matching these are wines that go well with robust meaty, even fatty dishes - an oxtail stew would be a good example.
Suitable for Vegans
