Description
In a nutshell:
A bold, flavoursome qvevri rosé from eastern Georgia.
The lowdown:
This striking Georgian rosé is made from the native red Tavkveri grape. It spent 18 months in qvevri and was bottled unfined and infiltered. With its light ruby, cherry colour, it's very much at the deeply coloured end of the rosé spectrum. Nonetheless, it's utterly delicious with lots of red fruit flavours, sour cherry and a spiky hint of pepper. Both super refreshing and quite elegant on the tongue, it gained more than a few plaudits in a Decanter Magazine tasting.
The Producer:
Okro's Wines are from the picturesque eastern Georgian town of Sighnaghi in the Kakheti wine region, the country's main wine-producing area. Run by brother and sister John and Jane Okruashvili, the focus here is on crafting characteristically Georgian natural wines from organically produced fruit. Winemaking follows traditional methods, with fermentations in old clay qvevris buried in the cellar floor. While they're best known for their superlative deep and complex orange wines, their wider range of reds, rosés, and sparkling wines are also well worthy of attention.
When to drink:
Try with grilled or cold meats and cheeses.
