Description
In a nutshell:
Intriguing stuff - Blanc de Noirs with a barely-there pink hue, straight out of Kent and full of delicate red fruit and bright, stony freshness.
The lowdown:
Pinot Meunier - usually the quiet one in sparkling wines - steps into the spotlight here, transformed into a bright, food-friendly white with plenty to say for itself. Being dark-skinned, it brings the merest hint of pink to this singular and fascinating wine. The nose is pure Kentish orchard in spring - pear and apple dancing with white blossom - while the palate offers a touch of sweet spice, racy freshness, and a bone-dry, creamy texture. The finish is long, bright, and seriously moreish. Unusual? Absolutely. But if you like something a little different, this one's well worth a try.
The Producer:
Simpsons Wine Estate is situated in the Elham Valley; an unspoilt seam in the north Downs of Kent where the contours of land, the climate and the soil are excellent for viticulture. The intensely lime-rich chalk soil forms part of the same chalk ridge that stretches from southern England through the Champagne region and on to Burgundy. The vineyards are less than eight miles from the coast providing a crucial maritime influence the wines.
When to drink:
A foodie's delight, especially with seafood. Try it with seared scallops, grilled lemon sole, or classic moules marinières - the bright freshness cuts through like a dream, while the creamy texture wraps around seafood like a well-tailored jacket.
