A restrained, structured Lake County Zinfandel with rich dark fruit character balanced by bright acidity and freshness.
The Lowdown:
Coming from the Lake County region this has all the depth and power you expect from Zinfandel along with an added vibrancy higher elevation vineyards tend to bring. Ripe plum and black cherry lead, with raspberry notes cutting through and a hint of spice adding complexity. There's good weight and richness, but the bright acidity adds an energetic freshness. A touch of toasted oak adds polish and integration to supply the finishing touches. Dark, bold and concentrated, certainly, but also juicy and lively all the way through.
The Producer: Shannon Family of Wines are based in Lake County, northern California, where the region's high-elevation vineyards lead to wines leaning towards structure, bright acidity and concentrated fruit. It was to make wines with precisely these qualities that led Clay Shannon here back in 2001. Now the region's largest winery, they have around 500 hectares on slopes looking west over Clear Lake and across to Mount Konocti. They're also one of the largest certified organic mountain vineyards in the United States. Beyond the vineyards, they've been instrumental in shaping Lake County's identity as a serious wine region and, through consistently well-made wines across their range, demonstrating what this cooler, northern part of California has to offer.
When to Drink:
Versatile enough to enjoy on its own or with grilled meats and barbecue where its freshness cuts through richness.
