Sella & Mosca 'Medeus' Cannonau di Sardegna 2023

Cannonau, Sardinia's signature red variety, has been growing on the island since time immemorial, though the rest of the world knows it as Grenache or Garnacha. As this one shows, the Sardinian take is darker-fruited, earthier, and a bit more structured than versions from elsewhere. Aged in stainless steel, it lets the bright fruit do the talking, with ripe red berry aromas leading the way. There's plenty of depth on the palate, with subtle balsamic notes adding a touch of richness. Fresh and savoury, with fine tannins and a long, silky finish, it's Cannonau in classic Mediterranean style.

Aged pecorino or a classic Sardinian antipasto of cured meats, olives, and roasted peppers work brilliantly - a good food wine, its bright fruit and savoury depth handle bold flavours without breaking a sweat.

With over 500 hectares of vineyards, Sella & Mosca are a major force in Sardinia's wine scene. Most of their vines surround the winery near Alghero in the northwest, with additional plots in Gallura and Sulcis. Founded in the early 1900s by a pair of Piedmontese entrepreneurs, they've grown steadily into one of the island's most respected producers. Their portfolio is based around Sardinian grape varieties, with the objective of capturing the character of a place where winemaking has been part of the culture for over 3,000 years.
