Description
In a nutshell:
A bright and elegant, organic white from from Calabria in the southern toe of Italy.
The lowdown:
Calabria at the southern end of Italy is a wine making area of considerable potential where there is some good value to be had. The Scala family who've been growing grapes around here for many years now make their own wines and are improving the quality of the area's wines immensely. Made with entirely the indigenous Greco Bianco grape variety Ciro Bianco is hand harvested, fermented and aged in stainless steel to make a refined wine bursting with floral and herbaceous aromas. The crispness and clean minerality makes it superbly easy drinking and being very well-balanced it rounds off with an elegant, clean finish.
The Producer:
Luigi Scala and his son Francesco currently look after this 18-hectare estate which has been in family hands for around 200 years. And from here they're proud to make wines from local grape varieties that properly reflect their Calabrian heritage. While they like to maintain traditional local practices to best reflect the terroir of the region they combine with the best of modern viticultural practices. They've been certified organic since 2016 and farming sustainably is very much at the heart of what they're about. Above all what's undeniable is that, in their corner of deepest southern Italy, they quietly make some exemplary and very good value wines.
When to drink:
With its freshness and zip it makes a great aperitif and is also a good partner to hot and cold seafood dishes.
