DESCRIPTION
A ripe and refreshing Italian Sangiovese from the unheralded Adriatic province of Molise
The lowdown:
Molise is a remote and sparcely populated province of Italy sandwiched between Abruzzo and Puglia which somewhat overshadow it when it comes to wine. However there are some excellent estates here, like Di Majo Norante, producing good quality, good value wines. Their Sangiovese so impressed us when we first tasted it we had to add it to our list where it's been a fixture for several years now. The grapes are hand harvested and aged in a mix of stainless steel and large oak barrels to achieve a good balance of smoothness and softness while preserving the primary fruit characteristics of the Sangiovese. It's got a lovely red cherry aroma with a touch of mediterranean herbs on the nose. And with the velvety tannins and lovely fruit with a hint of leather and spice there isnt much more you could ask for the price.
When to drink:
A crowd pleasing, easy to drink wine that's a fail-safe winner. Pairs really well with Bolognese sauces, or mature cheeses.

PRODUCER
Di Majo Norante

The Di Majo Norante winery is located to the north of the Gargano in Molise on the estate of the Marquis Norante of Santa Cristina. Sitting on the Adriatic coast just south of Abruzzo Molise isn't one of the Italy's well known wine producing regions, but estates such as this have been quietly working away here through the years making some excellent wines. The estate has been dedicated to the cultivation of vines since as long ago as the 1800s. In the 1960s a modern cantina was constructed and vines were replanted in the Ramitello zone. Optimal exposure, constant breezes during the summer, excellent soil composition and a slope toward the Sciabolone and Madonna Grande valleys, blend together to create a particularly favourable environment for the production of wine. Alessio Di Majo strives to produce the best quality possible at a price that is extremely affordable to the consumer. To ensure consistently high quality, he has hired renowned oenologist, Riccardo Cotarella, as a consultant.
