Description
In a nutshell:
A ripe and refreshing Italian Sangiovese from the unheralded Adriatic province of Molise
The lowdown:
This Sangiovese so impressed us when we first tasted it we had to add it to our list and it's been a fixture for several years now. The grapes are hand harvested and aged in a mix of stainless steel and large oak barrels to achieve a good balance of smoothness and softness while preserving the primary fruit characteristics of the Sangiovese. It's got a lovely red cherry aroma with a touch of mediterranean herbs on the nose. And with the velvety tannins and lovely fruit with a hint of leather and spice there isnt much more you could ask for the price.
The Producer:
Di Majo Norante is in the Molise region, a remote and sparsely populated area sandwiched between Abruzzo and Puglia on the Adriatic coast and in vinous terms somewhat overshadowed by its neighbours. However, there are estates such as this that have been quietly working away here through the years making some excellent wines. At his modest, but well run, estate Alessio Di Majo produces some lovely wines at quite affordable prices which were very pleased to have discovered.
When to drink:
A crowd pleasing, easy to drink wine that's a fail-safe winner. Pairs really well with Bolognese sauces, or mature cheeses.
