Description
England: Devon
Crisp & Fresh White
Dry - Light-Bodied - Lightly Oaked
Vegan - ABV 10.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
A light, refreshing English white, blending Madeleine Angevine and Bacchus with Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.
The Lowdown:
Over forty years in the making, this is one of the originals of English wine. Produced on the same Dart Valley estate since the early days of this country's winemaking revival, it's built on a blend of Madeleine Angevine, Bacchus and a touch of Pinot Gris, bringing together delicate florals, ripe pear and fresh apple fruit. A short spell on the lees and a brief period of barrel ageing add texture, breadth and a hint of creaminess, keeping the balance between freshness and gentle weight. A long-established classic that still shows exactly why it endures.
The Producer:
Originally known as Sharpham Estate, Sandridge Barton was one of the those that helped English wine get established, planting its first vines on the River Dart back in the 1980s and proving that Devon could do more than cream teas. In 2020 the whole operation crossed the river to Sandridge Barton near Stoke Gabriel, swapping its old home for a larger estate with limestone soils and room to grow. The winemaking remains firmly in-house, with estate fruit only and a leaning towards wild ferments. New name, new site, but the same pioneering streak.
When to Drink:
Spot on with salads, seafood or soft cheeses - or simply when you want something fresh but not flimsy.
