Description
In a nutshell:
A silky and open Tuscan red, bursting with cherry and plum flavours and a hint of spice.
The lowdown:
This might be a modest IGT Toscana, but coming from the estimable Castello Romitorio estate, this is more like a baby Brunello made in a ready-to-drink-now style. The combination of gently sloping vineyards on rich volcanic soils is a bit of a winner for the Sangiovese that goes into this. Aged for six months in large oak casks, it's full of fragrant, floral aromas with notes of red berries and cherries. There's a touch of savouriness to it on the palate, where the easy-going tannins and a long, fruit-laden finish make this a very easy-to-enjoy wine.
The Producer:
Castello Romitorio, a magnificent fortress turned wine estate in the late 1980s, has truly found its rhythm since Filippo Chia joined his father in 2005. They craft a captivating range of Sangiovese expressions, from approachable Toscana wines to sought-after Brunellos and their dedication to quality shines through, with each sip revealing the unique character of the Montalcino terroir. Whether a casual red or a special occasion Brunello, Castello Romitorio delivers a taste of Tuscan elegance.
When to drink:
Savoury and soft, this Tuscan red is made for a bowl of pasta piled high with a rich, meaty ragù or earthy mushrooms.
