Description
In a nutshell:
A subtle, nutty and complex Spanish Brandy de Jerez made in the sherry producing part of Andalucia.
The lowdown:
Romate's Solera Reserva is an impressively subtle and complex Brandy de Jerez. It's got nutty and sherried notes with caramelized hints on the nose. Light and fruity with oranges, raisins and a touch of coffee, it finishes with a bite of spirit and some lingering sweetness. And, for the price, it's excellent value.
The Producer:
Bodega Sanchez Romate Hermanos was founded in 1781 by Juan Sánchez de la Torre. In the early years they steadily built their name as a sherry producer. Towards the end of the 1800s, however they branched out into brandy production which after a while became a key part of their operations. Following a steady decline in their fortunes in the first half of the twentieth century the business was sold to a group of friends in 1954 whose families still retain ownership making them one of the larger sherry houses still in family hands. While they maintain a collection of excellent sherry soleras, the mainstay of their business, these days, is their excellent range of Brandies de Jerez.
