Roebuck Estates Classic Cuvée 2019
A rounded, textured Sussex sparkler from the classic varieties with real depth and complexity.
Brut, Lightly Oaked
Vegan
The Lowdown
Classic Cuvée is Roebuck's flagship and expresses their house style to a tee. While Chardonnay is the main feature with Pinots Noir and Meunier making up the rest, it's the winemaking that adds an extra dimension. A small portion sees time in old Burgundian oak, whilst four years on lees develops the biscuity notes you expect from serious sparkling wine. The result has more texture and roundness than many and with baked apple and citrus on the nose, fine bubbles and a long, balanced finish, it's got a lot going on.
The Occasion
Great as an aperitif wine, but also pairs well with shellfish dishes.
The Producer
Roebuck Estates, located near the historic market town of Petworth in West Sussex, has made quite a splash since its establishment in 2013. Founders Mike Smith and John Ball spent years scouting for the right sites, driven by their belief in the potential of the English wine industry. They started with a vineyard at their base in Tillington and have since added five more parcels across Sussex and into Kent. All their vineyards grow the holy trinity of sparkling wine grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. It hasn't taken them long to become a key player in the English sparkling wine scene.
