Description
In a nutshell:
An intense and fruity red from Friuli bursting with wild berry flavours.
The lowdown:
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso - a bit of a mouthful, yes, but in the right hands this Friulian grape makes captivating wines. This one from Russolo is a classic example. A deep purplish hue hints at its intense character, brimming with brambles, dark plums, and black cherries, all underpinned by spicy, earthy notes. A year in oak imparts a robust tannic structure, balancing the wine's lively acidity and promising a long life ahead. An intriguing and delicious taste of north-east Italy.
The Producer
The Russolo family has been making wine in Friuli for over a century, in the process establishing their name as a hallmark of quality. Today, Iginio and Rino carry this on making wines renowned for their concentrated varietal character, a result of meticulous vineyard practices that prioritise low yields and sustainable farming. With organic fertilizers and minimal sulphur use, they nurture their vines, a mix of indigenous Friulian and international varieties, on the well-draining, stony soils around Pordenone.
When to drink:
With its structure and balance this is a natural partner for a hearty plate of venison or wild duck.
Suitable for Vegans
