Rabl Grüner Veltliner 'Löss', Kamptal 2025

You could think of Grüner Veltliner as Austria’s take on Sauvignon Blanc: bright and dry with lime, grapefruit and crisp apple, but with a bit of white-pepper spice instead of grassy notes. This comes from breezy Kamptal hillsides, where cool nights lock in acidity and loess soils add a gentle, stony roundness to the citrus fruit, and it’s unoaked, so it’s all about crisp citrus, a touch of tropical lift and a peppery note on a clean, dry finish.

The spicy and citrius characteristics here will suit many types of asian recipes, firm fleshed fish dishes and even asparagus.

Weingut Rabl is a long-established family estate from the town of Langenlois, with records of growing vines in the area going back as far as 1750. Rudi Rabl is the current custodian, with the next generation already teed up and working in the vineyards and winery. They farm roughly 80–100 hectares on the slopes around Langenlois, including recognised Kamptal sites such as Käferberg, Dechant and Steinhaus, and the estate is certified ‘Sustainable Austria’, with a clear focus on biodiversity, reduced chemical use and careful management of water and soils. Their style is classic Kamptal: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling that highlight Austria’s cooler-climate freshness and precise fruit.
