Description
In a nutshell:
New meets old in this rich, structured and robust high altitude Rioja.
The lowdown:
Traditionally Rioja has been characterised by how long it has spent aging, from Joven and Crianza up to Gran Reserva, but since 2018 single vineyards and villages can now be represented, acknowledged and respected on the label. This fantastic, bold Rioja is a Vino de Peublo from the village of Quel high up in Rioja Oriental (née Baja) with the grapes coming from four selected plots surrounding the village, all owned by the family winery which is located in the heart of Quel itself. All important attributes that form part of the Vino de Pueblo designation. The vines are dry-farmed (no irrigation), many are old bush vines, grapes are hand-harvested and undergo three rigorous stages of selection prior to fermentation - vineyard, winery and after de-stemming. The wine is matured for two years in oak barrels and large foudres before bottling.
Fantastic, intense, perfumed aromas of black fruit, blueberries with notes of spice, mocha, fig and balsamic touches. The palate is full and smooth with generous bramble and plum fruity notes, spice, ripe tannins and an underlying freshness that holds everything together and runs through to the clean finish.
When to drink:
Drinking now though will develop into the 2030s. An easy match with red or grilled meat, also works well with lamb.
