Description
In a nutshell:
Pure, ripe and fresh Primitivo from its traditional home of Manduria in Puglia.
The lowdown:
The DOC of Primitivo di Manduria down in the heel of Italy has officially been recognised as the traditional home of this popular grape for decades now and the Produttori still produce some of the best examples around. The Lirica is made from one of their top selections of grapes which come from small growers with an average of only two hectares of vines, are grown practicing organic principles and hand-picked before heading to the winery on the outskirts of the old town of Manduria itself. Lots of fresh, ripe, pure cherry, plum and dark fruit aromas with notes of sweet spice and liquorice. The palate is broad with an abundance of ripe fruit and sweet spice flavours, mild tannins, a touch of savouriness and balanced by really clean, bright acidity.
The Producer:
Produttori di Manduria is Puglia's oldest cooperative, set up in 1932 with just 17 growers, who, nowadays have over 400 members who, collectively, cultivate more than 2,000 hectares of vines. They've long been champions of Primitivo going back long before it was the fashionable grape it is today. And while wines made from this grape forms the backbone of their production, they also make a number of very interesting whites and this is where the local variety Fiano comes into its own. They're keen to keep their standards to the highest level and this is borne out by the awards they regularly achieve right across their range.
When to drink:
A food friendly wine try with meat and tomato based dishes, grilled vegetables, and North African-style lamb dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
