Description
In a nutshell:
A silky, textured and complex white from the Veneto in north east Italy.
The lowdown:
Pieropan are one of the top producers in Soave and make wines that express the full potential of the Garganega grape variety and they much to dispel the view that Soave are merely pleasant and uncomplicated quaffers. This wine is made from grapes grown in their La Rocca vineyard which has a local microclimate which helps produce wines with a distinctive perfume and unique character. After fermentation in a mix of stainless steel anf 500 litre oaks casks part of it was further aged in oak for a year before bottling. A golden yellow in the glass it's full of exotic fruit and nutty aromas which follow to the palate which has a real elegance and balance. The hints of spice and minerally backbone at the lengthy finish give it a nicely satisfying sign off.
The Producer:
Pieropan's estate covers 58 hectares situated on the stony hills of Soave Classico between Verona and Venice. The Pieropan family has been producing wines in Soave since the 1890s, their current winery being in the town itself. Being so synonymous with the area they were the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave on the label in the early 1930s. Nino Pieropan took over from his father in 1970 and was the first producer in Soave to make a single vineyard wine, 'Calvarino', in 1971. Nino's two sons, Andrea and Dario, took over the running of the estate in 2017. From the 2015 vintage onwards, all Pieropan wines are organically certified.
When to drink:
It's elegance and depth mean this is capable of ageing well for a few years yet. With food it'll partner richer dishes, like poultry or game in creamy sauces, better than simpler Soaves would.
