Deep-coloured sparkling Shiraz with dark berry fruit, spice and oak richness wrapped up in a bold, fizzy finish.
The Lowdown:
The lovechild of Barossa Shiraz and Champagne, but louder. Sparkling Shiraz is Australia's unapologetic contribution to the sparkling world, and Peter Lehmann's Black Queen shows it in full voice. Shiraz from Barossa vineyards is fermented and matured in oak before the sparkle is added, producing something dark, frothy and impossible to mistake for anything else. Blackberry and plum are joined by chocolate, liquorice and spice, all carried on a rich, creamy mousse with soft tannins underneath. It's bold, indulgent and gloriously over the top, while still keeping its balance.
The Producer:
The name Peter Lehmann is practically synonymous with the Barossa Valley, but it all started with a sticky situation back in 1979. Faced with a glut of grapes and struggling growers, Peter famously offered a deal - "I'll take your grapes and turn them into wine," he said, "but I'll only be able to pay you once it sells." The grateful growers agreed, and many reckon that without this audacious arrangement, the Barossa might have lost a good deal of its precious old vines. Thanks to Peter's sheer determination and savvy, the winery quickly became a Barossa icon, producing wines that made waves both in Australia and abroad. Though Peter himself has since passed on and the company's changed hands, the legacy he built - of crafting some of South Australia's finest - remains untarnished and highly respected.
When to Drink:
Great with roast meats, glazed ham, barbecued dishes or even chocolate desserts. Serve well chilled to keep the exuberance in check.
