Description
In a nutshell:
A luscious and silky smooth Nuits-Saints-Georges from a well regarded vineyard and producer.
The lowdown:
The lieu-dit, or vineyard, of Au Bas de Combe sits at the northern end of the appellation just before entering Vosne-Romanée and the wines from here are sometimes thought of as having some of the Vosne character about them. In keeping with the house style winemaker Patrice Cacheux makes this in a rich, ripe style, using new oak during maturation to achieve his desired result. The juicy berry fruit aromas have a slight herbal note which then leads on to the palate where the developed fruit flavours merge deliciously with the supple, soft tannins which linger long in the mouth during the lengthy finish.
The Producer:
With his home and winery located in the Côte de Nuits village of Vosne-Romanée Patrice Cacheux is the fourth generation of the family to run the domaine. They have around 7 hectares of vines in total most of which are in the appellation Vosne-Romanée itself, along with some parcels in Nuits-Saints Georges and Chambolle-Musigny. They are also one of the select domaines which have a holding in the famous Échezeaux Grand Cru. Overall the estate's style is one of aiming for rich, ripe wines that are made with a healthy dose of new oak and on which Patrice's father, Jacques, earned the domaine's good reputation in the latter years of the twentieth century. And under Patrice's guidance this approach has stood the test of time very well.
When to drink:
A beautiful example of good Côte de Nuits Burgundy which is ready to drink now or any time through to the mid 2030s. Particularly good with duck, pork or game.
