Nuits-Saint-Georges, Domaine Henri Gouges 2021
Henri Gouges is a benchmark name in Nuits. Supple red fruit, discreet oak influence and measured tannins.
The Lowdown
Domaine Henri Gouges is fortunate to have some of the best parcels of vines in Nuits-Saint-Georges and fruit from seven of them is used is this cuvée. Along with the ripe red fruit aromas are a few subtle earthy notes. On the palate there are nicely developed black cherry and sweet raspberries with a little savoury herbiness. The fresh acidity and light, elegant tannins bring everything to life making it easy to see why wines from this domaine are so sought after.
The Occasion
The classic red Burgundy food pairings of game, pork and poulty are absolutley spot on choices here.
The Producer
Undoubtedly one of the most famous domaines in the northern Côte d'Or market town of Nuits-Saint-Georges Domaine Henri Gouges has owned vineyards in the village for generations. Gregory Gouges, great grandson of founder Henri, currently runs the estate. In total they have just under fifteen hectares of vines in the appellation including parcels in 6 premier cru vineyards. These days the amount of new oak used is restricted to about 25% for each vintage. The combination of their small production and high demand for their wines means they're becoming increasingly harder to find.
