Description
In a nutshell:
Refined elegance in this rich, toasty charmer; just what aged Hunter Valley Semillon should be.
The lowdown:
Complex, aged and layered, this is a niche wine style that retains an enthusiastic band of followers. Hunter Valley semillons are made to age gracefully and achieve levels of richness and flavour that belie their modest alcohol levels. Mount Pleasant's Elizabeth is a classic of the type. It's matured in bottle for five years before release to ensure it's attained the required characteristics. Honeyed citrus comes through on the nose and palate alongside a toastiness and silkiness on the tongue while the clean acidity keeps it all lively and fresh right through to the finish.
The Producer:
The Hunter Valley in New South Wales is Australia's most historic wine region. And Mount Pleasant, although a relative newcomer having only been founded in 1921, own some of the country's most historic vineyards which were first planted back in the nineteenth century. They've long made critically acclaimed shiraz's and semillons and since coming under new ownership in 2021 new investment in both their vineyards and winery is something that bodes well for the future.
When to drink:
Built to last, this will age gracefully for some years yet. With food go for things like fish, seafood and veggie dishes.
