Description
In a nutshell:
A concentrated and tropically flavoured Chilean Sauvignon Blanc from the highly regarded Viña Montes.
The lowdown:
Montes' Classic Series varietals are among their 'entry level' wines, hence the modest price, but the quality they reach makes them pretty good value for money and ones well worthy of a spot in our list. The fruit for this comes from vineyards in the Casablanca Valley where the proximity to the coast results in cool breezes and morning fogs - good for making aromatic Sauvignon Blancs. After harvesting and cold soaking the fruit is fermented in controlled conditions before being aged in stainless steel to retain the characterisitc freshness and tropical aromas of a cool climate Sauvignon. On the palate citrus fruits like pink grapefruit and tropical fruits such as white peach and passion fruit are accompanied by floral notes and green pepper hints that lead up to the lively finish.
The Producer:
Viña Montes began in 1987 as a partnership between Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, two pillars of the Chilean wine industry. They were convinced that Chile has the capability to produce wine of a quality to match anywhere else in the world and they set out to put this into practice. Douglas Murray died in 2010 but Aurelio has continued to develop and grow the business. Through the 1990's they focussed on the Apalta region of the Colchagua valley, where their winery is to be found near the town of Santa Cruz about 2 hours south of Chile's capital Santiago. And while much of their fame can be ascribed to their iconic wines, among them Montes Alpha 'M', Montes Folly and Purple Angel, they also produce many more wines ranging from excellent and good value entry level varietals right up to some of the most expensive and highly regarded wines Chile has to offer.
When to drink:
It's zip and liveliness make perfect as wine by the glass. Also enjoy it with fresh salads, fish or simply on its own.
Suitable for Vegans
