Description
In a nutshell:
Bright, light, unoaked and very drinkable ruby red Valpolicella from an enthusiastic biodynamic producer.
The lowdown:
Valpolicella comes from the Veneto region of Italy just north of Verona and this wine is from the Classico, zone where the best vineyards are situated. It's a blend of mainly Corvina with Rondinella and Corvinone plus a small amount of the more obscure Molinara and Oseleta grapes. This cuvee is fermented with natural yeasts in stainless steel, no oak ageing takes place, which highlights the fresh minerality and juicy cherry and plum flavours. It's a passionately biodynamic estate and their wines are bottled unfiltered, unfined and with a real integrity.
The Producer:
Azienda Agricola Monte DallOra is to be found in the rolling hills to the northwest of Verona and was established by the husband-and-wife team of Carlo Venturini and Alessandra Zantedeschi who both come from families steeped in viticulture. They are both determinedly attached to biodynamic agriculture and aim to ensure that their wines are all authentic expressions of the local terroir and that the methods they use are environmentally sustainable. And while they stick to time honoured methods the fact that their wines are finding an ever-increasing audience speaks volumes for the quality they are consistently able to produce.
When to drink:
Brightly fresh and fruity it makes a good wine to drink by itself, but it also matches well with the likes of spicy sausages, game and white meats.
