Description
Germany: Pfalz, Baden & Franken
Crisp & Fresh White
Dry - Light-Bodied - Unoaked
ABV 12.0% - 75.0cl
In a Nutshell:
Leave any German prejudice at the door - this is Sauvignon Blanc, not Riesling, and it's got Loire-like freshness with a little extra fruit lift.
The Lowdown:
This isn't the tropical blast of a New Zealand Sauvignon, nor the sharp austerity of a Sancerre - it finds its own middle ground. Grown in the Pfalz, Mineralstein lives up to its name with a crisp, stony backbone, while still showing bright gooseberry, citrus and a flicker of elderflower. It's taut and refreshing, more Loire than Kiwi in style, but with a touch more fruit expression to keep it approachable. A German Sauvignon that quietly outsmarts the stereotypes.
The Producer:
Growing up, Gerd Stepp's future was never in much doubt - born into a Pfalz winegrowing family, he was in the vineyards from an early age. Before returning to Bad Dürkheim in 2010, he worked vintages from New Zealand to Africa and across Europe, building experience along the way. His aim is to make wines that "express the authentic and true character" of their origin, keeping soils naturally fertile by avoiding unnecessary chemicals. Working with around 20 local growers, including his family's own small plots, he produces several varieties in small batches, keeping the focus firmly on quality.
When to Drink:
Serve well-chilled with goat's cheese, grilled sea bass, or asparagus - all natural accomplices to its citrus-edged friskiness.
