Description
In a nutshell:
A subtle and approachable red Burgundy from the Côte-de-Nuits.
The lowdown:
Marsannay is the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits almost in the suburbs of Dijon and the red wines from here are known for their delicate fruitiness. And this admirable expression from Frédéric Magnien demonstrates those qualities to a tee. All the fruit is from his 'Les Mogottes' vineyard and has a welcoming soft acidity and silky texture which sits very well in balance with the earthy fruit flavours and understated vanilla oakiness. A really good example of a northern Côte de Nuits red.
The Producer:
Nestled in the picturesque village of Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côtes de Nuits, Domaine Magnien is a family estate now helmed by Frédéric Magnien. Since achieving biodynamic certification in 2015, they've taken a thoughtful approach to winemaking, notably using terracotta amphorae for ageing. This method promotes gentle micro-oxidation without the flavour influence of oak. The estate produces wines from their own vineyards under the name "Domaine Michel Magnien", while also crafting wines from carefully selected bought-in fruit, under the "Frédéric Magnien" label. It's an understated yet passionate endeavour in the heart of Burgundy.
When to drink:
It's delicacy and finesse make it a good pairing with rich feather game like duck or pheasant.
Suitable for Vegans, Biodynamic
