Description
In a nutshell:
A rounded and fruity Côte de Beaune white from the village of Maranges.
The lowdown:
The lesser known Côte d'Or village of Maranges is the most southerly in the area sitting adjacent to Santenay but produces some delightful and ripe wines, with whites only accounting for around 10% of production. This young, elegant and very approachable example comes from the south facing vineyard of Vignes Blanches in Dezize-les-Maranges. Classically matured in new and used oak barrels there are aromas of white flowers, lemon, peach and stone fruits leading onto a soft and fresh palate with those oaky, creamy notes coming through balanced by clean acidity. Highly enjoyable and rewarding young Côte de Beaune white.
The Producer:
Sitting in the village of La Rochepot, just a few kilometres south of Beaune, Franck Lamargue has been running his small domaine since 2005 after leaving a cooperative to start on his own. With about 12 hectares of vines, he has parcels in several southern Côte de Beaune appellations, particularly in Maranges and Monthélie. His winery, housed in the former village tile factory, boasts vaulted cellars where the wines mature. Franck is a fastidious vigneron, and his wines are characterised by their generosity of flavour, offering great value for money. A quietly impressive operation.
When to drink:
Naturally pairs well with white fish and creamy white meat dishes. Also try with pasta with white sauce or mushroom risotto.
