Description
In a nutshell:
A smooth, fruit-forward Rioja, with juicy blackberries, a touch of spice, and well-integrated oak adding warmth and balance to its fresh, easy-going style.
The lowdown:
There's real substance to this classic Rioja, and something to which the squat bottle adds a nice touch of character. Vibrant and aromatic, it's full of ripe, mature fruit layered with spice - think clove and a hint of white pepper. After 12 months in a mix of French and American oak, the wine has a lovely balance of integrated oak and ripe tannins. The result is intense yet juicy, well-rounded and satisfying, offering depth without overwhelming. A Rioja with a bit of flair but still true to its roots.
The Producer:
Situated in the small town of Azagra, on the border of Navarra and Rioja, Bodegas Manzanos is uniquely positioned to produce wines from both renowned regions. Founded in 1890, the real transformation occurred in 2010 when Victor Fernández de Manzanos, his brother David, and Laura Mateo took the helm. They revitalised the winery, introducing cutting-edge equipment and expanding their facilities. Today, they manage several hundred hectares of vines, crafting a diverse array of wines. Their Finca Manzanos, Voché, and Castillo de Enériz ranges brilliantly showcase both contemporary and traditional winemaking styles, embodying the best of both worlds.
When to drink:
Perfect with Spanish meatballs, roasted peppers, or grilled chorizo - the juicy fruit, gentle spice, and smooth oak make it a great match for bold, smoky, and tomato-based dishes without overpowering them.
