Description
In a nutshell:
A dry and delicately perfumed delight. This Sicilian speciality has an enticingly heady feel about it.
The lowdown:
Subtle aromatics are the standout features here, hints of sage, jasmine and lavender circle around apple and cedar aromas on the nose. It's a dry wine, as 'Secco' implies and on the tongue it has beautiful acidity, delightful fruit intensity leading through to a crisp refreshing finish. If you're familiar with white muscats from other regions, you'll be getting the idea with this. Zibibbo is the local Sicilian name for muscat and this one is a pretty good example of the type. It's also certified organic.
The Producer:
The Mandrarossa label comes under the umbrella of Cantine Settesoli, the leading cooperative in southwest Sicily. Now operating from its own dedicated winery Mandrarossa increasingly focusses on single site wines with an emphasis on native Sicilian varieties such as Nero d'Avola, Grillo, Grecanico and dry Zibibbo. Minimal intervention in the vineyard and sustainable farming are among their guidelines and an increasing vineyard area is being converted to organic cultivation. They're a dependable source of good quality, good value wines.
When to drink:
Delicious drinking by itself it also suits all types of salads, fishy and seafoody pasta dishes.
