Description
In a nutshell:
An exemplary South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon from the famous Coonawarra area.
The lowdown:
Sitting in South Australia's Limestone Coast area Coonawarra is the part of Australia where Cabernet Sauvignon rules and this from the excellent Majella estate is a wonderfully good value example given its provenance. From the famous red Terra Rossa soils the fruit grown here makes a very elegant, powerful and well made wine. It has deep rich blackcurrant, vibrant redcurrant, damsons, menthol, cedar and spice on the palate. Wonderfully smooth, rich and intense it signs off with a long and lingering finish.
The Producer:
Majella are among the top echelons of producers in the highly renowned South Australian wine region of Coonawarra. Starting out in the late 1960s Brian and Anthony Lynn grew grapes on some land purchased by their parents and sold them to other wineries in the area - chiefly Wynn's Connawarra estate - and it wasn't until 1991 that they decided to make some wine of their own. The success of their early wines prompted them to build a winery on their own premises which started production in 1999. From the outset all their wines have been made by the talented Bruce Gregory and this, combined with the fact they're fortunate to own some prime vineyards on the famed red soil, or 'Terra Rossa', for which Coonawarra is noted, has earned them consistent acclaim. In total they have about 60 hectares of vines, on just over half of which grows Cabernet Sauvignon. On a further third is planted Shiraz with a little Merlot and Riesling making up the remainder. As for the future, they are fully committed to continuing to stay among the topflight of South Australian producers.
When to drink:
Complex and rich it's drinking well now and has the stamina to last to the late 2020s. Perfect with all types red meats or mature, hard cheeses.
Suitable for Vegans
