Description
In a nutshell:
A carefully oaked California Chardonnay with plenty of citrus, a touch of tropical fruit, and a smooth, easy-going charm.
The lowdown:
For a modern spin on classic Californian Chardonnay, this is exactly the place to start. The vineyards of Lodi in California's Delta region can always be relied on for ripe tropical and stone fruit flavours, and this one has them in spades. A well-judged eight months in oak adds a touch of creaminess - enough to round things out without ever taking over. There's plenty of weight and richness here, but a good streak of citrusy freshness keeps it balanced. Generous, smooth, and full of character.
The Producer:
Oak Ridge Winery may have only been making wine since 2002, but the Maggio family have been tending vines in Lodi since the 1920s - so they know their way around. With a hefty 1,000 hectares under vine, they're no small operation, yet they've kept things firmly in the family. Rudy Maggio, who snapped up the winery, runs things alongside his three daughters. Their Maggio range is the real jewel in the crown, earning them a solid reputation for top-notch varietals. Big but family-run, traditional yet ambitious - Oak Ridge is Lodi through and through.
When to drink:
Smooth enough to enjoy on its own, but even better with roast chicken and crispy potatoes or a rich, creamy tagliatelle alfredo. The ripe fruit and touch of oak know exactly what they're doing.
Suitable for Vegans
