Description
In a nutshell:
Imagine juicy stone fruit kissed by a squeeze of lemon - but make it bubbly, and you've got this intriguing French sparkler
The lowdown:
Fished a cork out of a curious bottle the other day, bubbling away merrily. First sip brought a wave of sunshine - sharp, clean citrus with a hint of those fleshy white peaches that never quite soften. There was a whisper of minerality too, like sucking on a pebble on a crisp morning walk. Turns out it's a bit of a maverick, made from a single grape - Viognier - but sourced from all sorts of places, none of them posh enough for a fancy label. But who needs a fancy label when the bubbles are this playful and the taste this darned refreshing?
The Producer:
Indisputably one of the Rhône's greats, M. Chapoutier boasts a rich history dating back to 1808 in Tain l'Hermitage. The estate's holdings are impressive, spanning the length of the Rhône and beyond, even reaching Australia. Yet, it's the arrival of Michel Chapoutier in 1990 that marks a turning point. His championing of biodynamic viticulture, coupled with exceptional vineyard sites, catapulted Chapoutier back to the top tier of Rhône producers. Their commitment to natural practices is absolute - no herbicides or pesticides, and a belief in biodiversity within the vineyards. Interestingly, their labels feature Braille since the mid-1990s. Today, they own Europe's largest biodynamic vineyard and create some of the Rhône's most iconic wines. Driven by Michel's energy, Chapoutier continues to acquire prime vineyards, cementing their status as a leader in the region.
When to drink:
Chill this dry, refreshing sparkler for a pre-dinner tipple, or let it liven up any light fish or spicy fare.
