Description
In a nutshell:
A deliciously complex dry white Vermouth from Jerez
The lowdown:
Two classic Jerez wines form the base of this tempting dry white Vermouth (Vermut in Spanish); Fino Sherry and Moscatel. Meaning that dry, crisp, minerality is blended with sweet, floral notes and then infused with chamomile, gentian, marjoram, orange peel, rosemary and wormwood to make a wine with an incredibly complex bouquet. The yeasty, mineral backbone is a core on which the citrus, floral and herbaceous flavours are allowed to shine before it culminates with a well-judged bitter and nutty notes at the finish.
The Producer:
Starting in modest circumstances back in 1896 Lustau originally sold their wines to larger producers rather than market them under their own name. It wasn't until the 1940s that they commenced with their own bottlings and this saw the start of real growth in their reputation. While still a small sherry house by the standards of many they are, nevertheless, one of the most respected and their range of sherries, including the acclaimed Almacenista collection, vermouths and brandies are consistently sought after.
When to drink:
Works wonderfully in whole range of cocktails, but for a great aperitif do try it on its own over ice.
