Description
In a nutshell:
Ebony coloured and lusciously sweet. A great example of the Sherry world's quintessential dessert wine.
The lowdown:
Made from Pedro Ximenez grapes which are laid out to raisin in the sun after picking and so have immense levels of natural sugar. So dark it's almost black in colour, it has super-concentrated flavours of raisins and figs and is enormously sweet. Velvety and soft on the palate it retains a perfect balance and long finish.
The Producer:
Starting in modest circumstances back in 1896 Lustau originally sold their wines to larger producers rather than market them under their own name. It wasn't until the 1940s that they commenced with their own bottlings and this saw the start of real growth in their reputation. While still a small sherry house by the standards of many they are, nevertheless, one of the most respected and their range of sherries, including the acclaimed Almacenista collection, vermouths and brandies are consistently sought after.
When to drink:
Wonderful sipped, chilled, with rich puddings and desserts. Or you can always pour it over vanilla ice-cream.
