Description
In a nutshell:
Dark, rich and dry Oloroso from Lustau's Solera Reserva range of sherries.
The lowdown:
A dry Oloroso this is not sweetened before bottling and has been aged for 12 years in Lustau's Bodega La Campana in Jerez. It has a dark bronze colour, something of a pungent nuttiness and a hint of smokiness, while on the palate the walnut and chestnut flavours are bound together by a dark chocolate character which gives it an intriguing intensity. The clean acidity gives it the right balance and lightness in the mouth.
The Producer:
Starting in modest circumstances back in 1896 Lustau originally sold their wines to larger producers rather than market them under their own name. It wasn't until the 1940s that they commenced with their own bottlings and this saw the start of real growth in their reputation. While still a small sherry house by the standards of many they are, nevertheless, one of the most respected and their range of sherries, including the acclaimed Almacenista collection, vermouths and brandies are consistently sought after.
When to drink:
Serve it just slighty chilled and it makes a good partner to mature cheeses.
