Description
In a nutshell:
A bright, fresh take on Malbec from inland Languedoc, full of dark fruit, a touch of spice, and a nice lift of acidity.
The lowdown:
Malbec from the Languedoc isn't something you see every day, but the bright, breeziness of this one is what caught our attention. Grown in the more elevated vineyards of 'Cathar Country' around Carcassonne and Limoux, it has a vibrancy and purity that comes from both the altitude and the absence of oak. Crushed blueberries lead the way, followed by a bitter-sweet mix of crème de cassis and violets. Ripe cranberry and a hint of cocoa nib round things out on the finish. A fresher take on Malbec than many, but all the better for it - easy-drinking and fruit-forward pleasure.
The Producer:
Boutinot, the guys responsible for the Les Volets range, is a big name in the UK's wine scene and are behind many labels seen on shelves up and down the country. Paul Boutinot kicked things off in 1980, starting with importing wines and soon partnering with winemakers around the globe. They've since gone on to produce their own wines from places like the Rhône Valley, Italy, South Africa and many other places. Their secret is in backing passionate winemakers who aren't afraid to push the envelope, always aiming for wines that really capture the essence of their regions. This, along with providing excellent value for money, is something they've really nailed.
When to drink:
Perfect for alfresco drinking, whether it's burgers, grilled sausages, or a simple charcuterie board. The bright fruit and freshness keep things lively, while the depth holds its own with the richer flavours.
Suitable for Vegans
