Description
In a nutshell:
From the hills around Gigondas in the Southern Rhône, this red is bold and well-structured, packed with dark fruit, earthy spice, and a confident, commanding character.
The lowdown:
Aside from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas is the Southern Rhône's next big hitter, known for bold, powerful reds with a bit of added minerality, thanks to its cooler, higher vineyards. This one gets that spot on. A blend of 80% Grenache with equal parts Syrah and Mourvèdre, it spends 12 months in French oak, adding layers to its already rich personality. On the nose, there's garrigue herbs, a subtle minty freshness, and a hint of spice. The palate delivers intense bramble fruit, a touch of plain chocolate, and smooth, ripe tannins. Silky yet bold, it's got plenty of oomph without overdoing it - confident, balanced, and quite moreish.
The Producer:
Boutinot, the guys behind the Les Crus du Sud label, is a big name in the UK's wine scene and are behind many labels seen on shelves up and down the country. Paul Boutinot kicked things off in 1980, starting with importing wines and soon partnering with winemakers around the globe. They've since gone on to produce their own wines from places like the Rhône Valley, Italy, South Africa and many other places. Their secret is in backing passionate winemakers who aren't afraid to push the envelope, always aiming for wines that really capture the essence of their regions. This, along with providing excellent value for money, is something they've really nailed.
When to drink:
Venison stew or rare roast beef are pretty good matches - the deep, velvety tannins and bold fruit stand up beautifully to rich, intense flavours. Perfect for bold red meat dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
