Description
In a nutshell:
This is a southern Rhône red that delivers rich dark fruit, a hint of spice, and a smooth, velvety texture that makes it effortlessly drinkable.
The lowdown:
Just across the Rhône from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Lirac delivers a similar warmth and charm as its famous neighbour - just with an easier-going price tag. This blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre is ripe, full-bodied, and refreshingly approachable. Blackberry and plum take the spotlight, with whispers of garrigue herbs, black pepper, and earthy undertones adding depth. The texture is richly velvety, the tannins smooth, and the overall vibe is unpretentious but with all the complexity you'd look for in a Rhône red of this standing.
The Producer:
Boutinot, the guys behind the Les Crus du Sud label, is a big name in the UK's wine scene and are behind many labels seen on shelves up and down the country. Paul Boutinot kicked things off in 1980, starting with importing wines and soon partnering with winemakers around the globe. They've since gone on to produce their own wines from places like the Rhône Valley, Italy, South Africa and many other places. Their secret is in backing passionate winemakers who aren't afraid to push the envelope, always aiming for wines that really capture the essence of their regions. This, along with providing excellent value for money, is something they've really nailed.
When to drink:
Think slow-cooked lamb shanks or rosemary-studded roast beef - its velvety texture and rich, herby flavours pair beautifully with these sort of dishes.
Suitable for Vegans
